What "Unblocking" Actually Means

Streaming platforms distribute content libraries by region. The same show may have completely different episode counts and subtitles in the US, Japan, and Singapore catalogs. Platforms determine your region primarily by the geolocation of your exit IP.

"Unblocking" means making your network exit IP recognized by the platform as being in the target region, so you can see that region's content library. Two conditions must be met:

  • Connect to a route in the target region (e.g., a US route) so your exit IP geolocates to the US
  • Some platforms also verify the account's registration region — try to keep the account region and route region consistent

VPNAN offers 120+ countries / 230+ routes, covering all major content regions. Once you connect to a route in the corresponding region, the platform will show you that region's library.

Native IP vs Residential IP

Streaming platforms detect VPN characteristics. Datacenter IP ranges (such as cloud provider IPs) are easily flagged as proxies, which leads to access restrictions. To reduce the chance of being detected, routes use two special types of IP:

Native IP

IPs assigned directly by local ISPs (such as Comcast in the US or NTT in Japan). These look identical to ordinary home users, so platforms usually don't flag them. Native IPs have the highest success rate for access.

Residential IP

Real home broadband IPs purchased in bulk from local ISPs, or IPs that simulate home broadband characteristics through specific methods. Residential IPs are closer to real users than datacenter IPs, though slightly less stable than native IPs.

When choosing a route, if your goal is streaming, prioritize routes labeled "Native IP" or "Residential IP." Regular relay routes may have lower latency, but their IP characteristics are obvious and easily detected by platforms.

Region Unblocking Support Table

Below are region access recommendations for major platforms. Platform policies change from time to time; what matters is what you see after connecting.

Platform Recommended Region Recommended Route Notes
Netflix US, Japan, Singapore Direct / IEPL Account region must match
Disney+ US, Japan Direct Platform policies change
HBO Max US Direct US account required
Hulu US Direct US account required
YouTube Premium US, Japan, Singapore Any Can subscribe across regions
Prime Video US, Japan, UK Direct Some content region-locked
BBC iPlayer UK Direct UK IP required

Note: These are common access recommendations; always refer to the platform's current policy. VPNAN does not guarantee permanent access to any platform — policy changes are normal.

Actual Bandwidth Requirements for 4K and Dolby Vision

Streaming platforms have clear bandwidth requirements for video quality. Here are the publicly known reference values:

Quality Minimum Bandwidth Recommended Bandwidth Notes
HD 1080p 5 Mbps 8 Mbps Any regular route works
4K UHD 15 Mbps 25 Mbps Needs stable bandwidth
Dolby Vision 20 Mbps 30 Mbps Bandwidth fluctuations degrade quality

Bandwidth is necessary but not sufficient. Route stability (packet loss, jitter) also affects quality. If bandwidth is sufficient but the route is unstable, the platform will automatically lower the quality. So for 4K, choose a route with enough bandwidth as well as low latency and low packet loss.

VPNAN's network covers 120+ countries / 230+ routes. IEPL dedicated lines and direct routes perform more stably during peak hours, making them suitable for extended 4K viewing.

Common Error Codes: Meanings and Fixes

When accessing streaming platforms, you may occasionally run into error codes. Here are the meanings and suggested fixes for common ones:

Error Code Platform Meaning Suggested Fix
M7111-5059 Netflix Proxy/VPN detected Switch route or region
M7111-1331 Netflix Unable to connect to service Restart client or switch route
83 Disney+ Region mismatch Connect to a route in the matching region
403 Hulu IP recognized Switch route
02036 BBC iPlayer Not in the UK Connect to a UK route

When you hit an error code, first try switching to another route in the same region. If that doesn't work, wait a while and try again — platform detection is sometimes intermittent.

FAQ

Why does it work sometimes but not other times?
Platforms update their IP detection strategies from time to time. A route's exit IP may get flagged on a given day, causing access to fail. Switching to another route in the same region usually restores access. VPNAN's route library has 230+ routes, so there are plenty of backups.
Will unblocking work forever?
No. Streaming platforms continually adjust their region restriction policies. A route that works today may not work tomorrow. VPNAN regularly optimizes its routes, but cannot promise permanent access to any platform. We recommend keeping an eye on policy changes and switching routes as needed.
How much bandwidth do I need for 4K?
Platforms officially recommend at least 15 Mbps for 4K. But that's just the minimum; for smooth playback, 25 Mbps or more is recommended. If bandwidth is insufficient, the platform will automatically lower the quality — that's normal.
Does my account region affect unblocking?
Yes. Some platforms (like Netflix) check whether the account's registration region matches the IP region. If your account is on the US region, connect to a US route. If the account region and route region don't match, you may only see part of the content.
Why doesn't it work even when I connect to the right region?
There could be a few reasons: the route IP has been flagged by the platform, the client has cached old IP information, or the account region doesn't match. Try: switching to another route in the same region, clearing the client cache, and restarting the client.
